A diabetic normally spends his entire day trying to minimize sugar content from his diet. All his energy is spent on maintaining the sugar levels in his body. Fear drives him to avoid even fruits as they contain natural sugars  .

On the contrary fruits, in moderate quantities, have been found to play an important role in managing diabetes Fruits being high in fiber content can slow the absorption of sugar and control blood sugar levels to a certain extent.

Importance of fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are best for maintaining the overall health . However, fruit juices and smoothies have unacceptably high sugar content and therefore they should be avoided, especially by a diabetic. Also, the fiber content of the fruit is lost in juices and smoothies.

There is evidence that the body metabolizes fruit in a much different and better way from that of a juice.  Even mangoes that are high in sugars can be a part of healthy diet as long as they are consumed in moderate proportion.

Craving for a sweet? Have a fruit and watch the craving, vanish. Sweets, which are low in nutritional value, can be replaced with fruits, most of which are high in nutrients and low in fat and sodium content. The American Diabetes Society (ADA) says that as long as a person is not allergic, any fruit is good to eat. Most fruits have a low glycemic index that is best for controlling blood sugar levels.

Make fruits with low glycemic index like apples, bananas, berries, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, oranges, peaches, pears, plums and strawberries a part of your daily diet and enjoy the fruits, now un-forbidden.
