               Leafy vegetable coriander Medicinal uses and health benefits 

Leafy veg Coriander is an annual herb and, according to the climatic conditions, is cultivated as a summer or winter annual crop.

Medicinal and Pharmacological Properties :

Health Benefits Coriander have a health-supporting reputation that is high on the list of the healing spices. In parts of Europe, coriander has traditionally been referred to as an “anti-diabetic” plant.

  Leaves:

  • leaves of the coriander (Coriandrum sativum, Apiaceae) are known as ‘cilantro’. Coriander leaves provides only 39 cal 100 gG , but their 1 phyto-nutrients profile is no less than any high calorie 7 food source; be it nuts, pulses or cereals or meat group.
  • Green leaves basically contain protein 3.3%, fat 0.6%, calcium 0.14%, phosphorus 0.06%, iron 0.01%. Leaves are the rich source of vitamin A and C. Research has shown that coriander leaves can also aid in digestion . Coriander 8 leaves have long been used to treat anxiety.
  •  Green leaf is used as a refrigerant. Fresh juice of leaves is used as a gargle in sore throat and stomatitis. Paste is applied over swellings and boils; also over cervical adenitis. The paste is prepared by pounding green leaves with barley flour.
  • The paste of dry fruits is applied over forehead and temples during headache. For cooling effect on the mind and for including sleep, fresh juice of the leaves, mixed with sugar, is given. It is also given in biliousness, intestinal irritations, heartburn, thirst and nausea
  • Coriander herb contains no cholesterol but is rich in anti-oxidants and dietary fiber which help reduce Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) while increasing the more acceptable High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) levels.
  • The leaves and seeds contain many essential volatile oils such as borneol, linalool, cineole, cymene, terpineol, dipentene, phellandrene, pinene and terpinolene

Vitamin sources :

  •  The leaves and stem tips are also rich in numerous anti-oxidant polyphenolic flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, rhamnetin and epigenin. This herb is a good source of minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron and magnesium.
  • Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure. Iron is essential for red blood cell production. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase.

  • It also has established role in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease patients by limiting neuronal damage in their brain. The coriander seeds oil have found application in many traditional medicines as analgesic, Coriander is also used externally to treat ulcers and rheumatism


Seeds:

coriander seeds alleviates swelling and pains. Paste of green coriander has very good action on headache caused by pitta. Externally, powdered green coriander alleviates burning sensation and pain in diseases like inflammation caused by pitta, erysipelas and lymphadenopathy.

Decoction of green coriander is useful in stomatitis. In epistaxis, nasal drops of green coriander act as a haemostat and thus stop bleeding. In conjuctivitis, either juice or decoction of green coriander is put in eyes.

The paste of dry coriander is used in headache. The seeds were included in a host of prescriptions forfever,diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion as in stomach and carminative  .

Internal uses:

Coriander used internally as tonics for majjadhatu. It cures vertigo, syncope and memory loss.
